What is Reglan?

Metoclopramide (generic name of Reglan) was first developed in Europe in the 1960s. It was found to restrain nausea, and to act on smooth muscle tissue to pace gastric emptying and decrease acid buildup. It was also used as a treatment for vomiting related with migraine headaches, radiation and chemotherapy treatments, and surgical operations. FDA approved this drug for short-term treatment (4-12 weeks) of diabetic gastroparesis and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in 1985. However, it was strictly prescribed only to adults who had not responded to other therapies.

In 1978, the British Journal of Medicine reported that metoclopramide was associated with tardive dyskinesia. It was a huge controversy that made other researchers intrigued and conducted their own studies. And through the years, further studies on metoclopramide have confirmed the results presented by British Journal of Medicine. Other movement disorders that have been linked to the use of Reglan are blepharospasm, ocular deviation, akathisia, secondary Parkinsons symptoms, and neuroleptic malignant syndrome.

Tardive Dyskinesia is characterized by repetitive, involuntary, purposeless movements for instance grimacing, tongue protrusion, lip smacking, puckering and pursing, and rapid eye blinking. Rapid movements of the arms, legs and trunk may also come about.

In 2006 and 2008, reports about new cases of Reglan tardive dyskinesia or other movement disorders doubled. Thus, in 2009, the FDA resulted in to requiring all manufacturers to include a boxed warning to their labels highlighting the risk of its long-standing or high-dose use, which they said had been linked with tardive dyskinesia.

Reglan lawsuit settlements

Reglan lawsuits have been filed against Reglan manufacturer, Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, and generic manufacturers of the drug. To prove a case of Reglan tardive dyskinesia, a Reglan lawyer must provide evidence that his client had a prescription for metoclopramide and took the drug for a minimum of three months. It must also be confirmed that the plaintiff developed symptoms related to tardive dyskinesia, like involuntary muscle movements, either while taking the drug or soon after treatment. Only a qualified Reglan lawyer can determine whether these criteria are adequately met to file a Reglan lawsuit.

If you or a loved one has taken Reglan and subsequently suffered from tardive dyskinesia or other side effects, seek for a qualified raglan lawsuit lawyer now.
